sony crisis

Sony has let the online gaming world down with its viral mayhem. In short, there was suspicions of fraud that were untold for over a week which is a long time for such a large company to neglect. So that is exactly what happened, Sony knew about the crisis and left the bad publicity to accumulate. So how did PR come to their aid? through crisis management online, which makes sense as that it where the problem arose in the first place! short articles by ‘fans’ of the brand were posted to distract angry consumers by discussing hot game topics and steering away from the problem. Smart move for an enormous stuff up!

Hip hop mogul P. Diddy – real name Sean combes, has gone viral to promote his new, very expensive headphones called Beats. With the help of Public Relations, Diddy’s debt crisis was transformed by using online tools and tactics to promote the exlusive, fashion statemement making headphones which his reps claim he designed. This is just another demonstation indicating how PR has helped big name corporates in time of crisis.

Kenda Wilkinson has been exposed numerously to the public with her attention grabbing stunts that are clearly backed up by her PR representative for fame. In more recent news, miss Wilkinson is cleaning her image by going on reality tv show, Dancing with the stars. This program is designed for ‘celebrities’ at a dead end of their career however, she is going viral first to clean up. Twitter, as mentioned so many times has helped public figures re shape their public life by allowing personal updates to be made at any time of the day. Wilkinson has used her account to keep her ‘fans’ up dated and remaining loyal and, as we know, loyalty to a brand or person = fame and fortune.

Kevin Smith

leave a comment »

I just wanted to continue on my blog about Kevin Smith. The information I elaborate on relates to how and why his public relations team went viral as opposed to any other media source. For instance, how easy and professional would it have been for it to be a main article or heading in the paper? Or how effective would it have been if he sat down for 20 minutes on an American Morning Show talking about his ordeal? When considering all the media opportunities his publicist could have taken, all would have been a success in getting his story heard however; it is the affordability and more importantly, practicality of viral communication that meshes in best with Mr Smith. Twitter updates, especially those of celebrity or massive corporate figures are the most successful because they are followed everyday people, they seem personal and are free!

Not all glamorous..

Below we have only blogged about the rich, gorgeous and ‘talented’! I have a really good example of Public Relations being demonstrated in this blog… Does anybody know Kevin Smith? Anyway, he is an American screenwriter whos story goes as follows: He boards a plane which brand will remain nameless and gets booted off because hes a big fellow. Ok…hes huge. Bad move nameless airline. Anyway, he updates his twitter account and ‘tweets’ that hes pretty peed off. Good move Mr Smith. His 1million followers were soon aware of the bad nameless airline and promoted bad publicitity. PR came to this airlines rescue soon after by responding to the tweets to justify themeselves virally- where mass media spend their time. Smart.

Kanye.. Kanye.. Kanye!

We all know Kanye West, we all know what he does and what he’s known for, but at the 2009’s Video Music Awards when he stood up after Taylor Swift had just accepted her award and in all bluntness said, – I’m sorry Taylor, but Beyonce is better than you. This obviously put a stint in his already arrogant reputation, but how good his PR team help? Well, really. They were Kanyes support. After the release of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was release, it was also named album of the year by Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, both being very influential magazines on society, given Kanye the upper hand, because yes, he is an arrogant pig, but when criticised one could say, he ‘brought’ it to the table. With his success, helped in image to society and with the way he brought it out with the 3o minute short film inclusive of the song ‘Runaway’ which featured on the new album creating a great teaser and a fresh start.

Chris Brown repents online

leave a comment »

Slightly pleased with my simple life, I enjoy sitting back and watching celebrities and dominant figures get slaughtered by the press, then cry on the shoulder of their publicist! This occurred a few years back when RnB singer, Chris Brown allegedly bashed his then girlfriend Rihanna. The news hit tabloids labeling Brown as a ‘lady basher’. Jokes, facebook groups, websites and games were dedicated to Rihanna limewired instantly whilst Browns career slowly came to end. Well, almost. PR stepped in again and used viral powers to repent his so called sins. Browns YouTube account was being bombarded daily by his true followers where he made numerous apologies, sang songs obviously to Rihianna and constantly updated his Twitter account with status updates indicating he made a mistake. Browns apology was hard to ignore as his PR team did such an effortless job to make him appear child-like and innocent even though the images below of the assault indicate otherwise. Apart from the typical viral sources, Browns PR team worked cleverly on magazine spreads and even a new album for the singer. If Kardashian and West’s cases were not enough to be convinced of how PR comes to the rescue, then Browns case definitely holds a very valuable position in the Public Relations industry.  Rihanna
